Online Forum: Q&A on Transitions

Children with physical disabilities and mobility need present unique challenges during transitions.

Q: How do you make sure everyone gets where they need to go?
How do you keep everyone engaged?

RESPONSIBILITY

As a teacher, I must take responsibility for each of my students.

ANECDOTAL RECORDS

If there are anecdotal records, I must read them and I must also continue to take note of any observations I have.

STUDENT'S BACKGROUND

I need to get to know the strengths and weaknesses of my students so I can adjust to their pace and I will know how to deal with any situation such as tantrums or any behavior changes. This is possible if I will also check the diagnosis, medications, and background of the student.

EXPECTATIONS

It is also very important to set the expectations or classroom rules clear to my students. The rewards and consequences must be constantly given.

TRANSITIONS

If I will ask my students to end the first activity, the transition must be smooth and clear not to a point where they will be forced to stop or surprised to be doing another activity.

PARENT-TEACHER COLLABORATION

I also realized that I need to work well and closely with the parents and guardians of the students because some behaviors may only be present in school but not in the home or vice versa.

Buhay Online English Tutor
